Residents in Turlough have raised the issue of a playground for local children at a community meeting this week, according to Cllr Harry Barrett. The Labour party local election candidate said this week that he was contacted after the meeting to request that the council provide a playground for local children. The meeting was told that there are some 120 children under the age of 12 within a two mile radius of the village, and currently they have no public play facility.

Wheelchair facilities in Castlebar town park playground to become an issue

The playground in the new town park in Castlebar will come up for debate at next months meeting of Castlebar Town Council, with councillor Harry Barrett alleging that the playground was not up to standard in providing facilities for wheelchair users. Cllr Barrett said this week that he would be putting forward a motion to the meeting to see the level of wheelchair accessible facilities improved, even though some of his council colleagues and the council management believe the playground conforms to the needs of all users.

Men’s Shed National Conference comes to Castlebar this weekend

The National Conference of The Irish Men’s Sheds Association hosted by Castlebar Men’s Shed will take place this weekend in GMIT Mayo Campus in Castlebar, starting today, Friday November 15. It is estimated that more than 300 members, or “shedders” as they are known, will attend the event from all over Ireland, with attendees from the UK and Holland also to give their experiences from Men’s Sheds in their countries. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will also attend the conference on Saturday.
